  • Background

Feeding Our Communities Partners started with a proposal from the Second Harvest Heartland, a Twin Cities based regional food bank whose Missing Meals study concluded that Blue Earth County low-Income residents are still missing about 16% of their meals. Therefore, Feeding Our Communities partners was proposed by the Second Harvest Heartland to fill the gap by creating a collaboration of all food assistance programs in order to increase their impact on hunger in Blue Earth County.

FOCP started with the Backpack Food Program, a pilot program serving Franklin Elementary from K through 3rd grade which ensure that children who live-insecure households are eligible to receive child-friendly, nutritious food  in their backpacks prior to weekends and school breaks. The second phase of the pilot program will cover up to 6th grade.
